FALSE WITNESS
Exodus 20:16
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. (KJV)

Two brothers made their wealth through theft and bribery. When one of them died, the other man offered the Church a large sum of money if the clergyman could publicly declare at the burial that his brother was a saint. The pastor accepted the challenge and said at the funeral, “Between the two brothers, the late one was a saint!”
Though the minister tried not to lie by being diplomatic, he was a false witness. The Bible reading for today demonstrates that God forbids us from providing false reports about our neighbours or enemies, regardless of how diplomatic we are. The late Billy Graham once wrote: “Bearing false testimony carries with it the basic idea of fabrication, which is, to make something up. Exaggeration fits right in with God’s prohibition because any effort to stretch the truth is, in and of itself, a fabrication. When God said, ‘You shall not bear false witness’, He was definitively pointing to the heart of man, and not even a person’s creativity with the truth is acceptable to God.”
Beloved, never testify in favour or against something you are ignorant of. Giving false witnesses is similar to deception and judging others unjustly. This could destroy the life and reputation of the innocent person or party involved. Be truthful, avoid favouritism, and don’t spread false rumours, but love equally. By doing so, you will be fulfilling what God commands.
